THE BIG PICTURE
In John 3:30, when speaking about Jesus, John the Baptist declared, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” This phrase captures the key to BreakAway: For Jesus to become greater in the community of Biola, and for students to become less by taking on the role of servants. Besides the primary purpose of blessing and outreach, this trip serves two further purposes: To support and serve our Iglesia PC church plant, and to encourage students to take new steps of faith by giving of themselves in serving others.
HISTORY OF IGLESIA PC BIOLA
Biola has been a focus community for the body of Christ for the last few years. Through the help of many from Peoples Church, the love of Christ has been starting to show in the community through involvement in Biola Elementary School and the development of a children’s orchestra. Each summer for the last three years, youth and adults from Peoples Church have been participating in a month long enrichment program that has opened up avenues for relationships in this poor community.
Six years ago, Jesus and Sandra Hernandez gave their lives to the Lord. The following year, they participated in a Peoples Church youth mission trip to Mexicali. Their passion for the Lord and gifting in evangelism has now led them to lead a team to plant Iglesia PC Biola. With the support of many from Peoples Church, IPC Biola has celebrated their one year anniversary and is making a mark on that community.
FOCUS OF BREAKAWAY
Breakaway is an intensive five-day missions trip focusing on supporting the Peoples Church Iglesia PC church plant in Biola. Students will stay on the mission field at Biola Congregational Church and from there minister to the community. Every afternoon students will work in several ministry areas including children’s VBS, evangelism & prayer, sports outreaches, and every night, we will be partnering with IPC Biola to lead evangelistic outreaches that will include such activities as Easter egg hunts, free dinner, a carnival for kids, music, a 3 on 3 basketball tournament, and a youth concert/ evangelistic message. There will be prayer and follow-up teams for each outreach.
EXPECTATIONS
Students attending Breakaway will be asked to participate in various areas of ministry and will serve in these areas throughout the week. We expect students to obey camp rules, to take the role of servants in each community, to have positive attitudes, and to be respectful to the leadership of the trip.
